If you’re thinking of building a garden, you have to consider your options. Fortunately, there are a variety of styles you can consider when deciding on a design. You can take your cues from traditional Chinese garden architecture, a monastic garden, or Terra Dominicata.
Traditional Chinese garden architecture
Chinese garden architecture is a form of landscape architecture which has been in use for hundreds of years. It is an art form that is part of the traditional culture of China.
The classical Chinese garden was a way of showing the beauty of nature. In the classical period, gardens were designed to create a calm and meditative atmosphere. They also served as a place to hold formal ceremonies.
A typical Chinese garden is made up of four main elements. These include pavilions, halls, ponds and trees.
Pavilions are normally in the shape of a boat. There are three parts to these structures: the front, the rear and the middle. The upper story is usually whitewashed, while the lower one is generally constructed of stone. Often, they have a panoramic view of the pond at the back.
Monastic gardens
Monastic gardens play an important role in monastery life. They serve the spiritual and economic needs of the monastic community. These gardens are not just decorative, but also help people to eat healthy and to care for their bodies.
Gardening was essential to life in the Middle Ages. In the beginning, gardens were restricted to indigenous plants. After a while, the monks expanded their gardens to include a variety of medicinal herbs.
Classic European monasteries have kitchen gardens, contemplative gardens, and orchards. Generally, they are decorated with trees and fountains.
Contemplative gardens provide the perfect place to meditate. Usually, they are enclosed and surrounded by shrubs and vines. The monks arranged their buildings and gardens to reflect their philosophy.
Kitchen gardens are a must for any monastery. Here, the monks grow a wide variety of herbs, vegetables, and fruits. This provides food for the abbey.
Svigals + Partners’ garden honors the lives lost to fatal gun violence in New Haven
Svigals + Partners’ New Haven Botanical Garden of Healing Dedicated to Gun Violence is an architectural and art collaboration designed to inspire communities and honor victims of fatal gun violence. The garden is located on Valley Street in the West Rock neighborhood of New Haven, Connecticut. It will be a community space for healing, contemplation, and conversation.
In the year of our lord, we’ve lost too many lives to the evils of guns. A group of women have teamed up with an architecture and planning firm to create a memorial to the fallen.
The garden is part of a broader project led by a coalition of concerned mothers who have lost children to gun violence. This includes the City of New Haven, a nonprofit organization called Urban Resources Initiative, and Yale-based Nucleus.
Terra Dominicata
Terra Dominicata is a rural retreat with a restaurant and winery located in the Priorat wine region of Spain. Located in the Montsant Natural Park, the complex uses local plants and craftsmen to create the guest accommodations. Originally, the site was a monastery, but now has been converted into a hotel.
The hotel has a restaurant and an outdoor pool. In addition, the property features an extensive garden. A grouping of planters houses a wide range of plants, including native species from the Montsant Natural Park. During the summer, the garden is surrounded by tall wisteria.
One of the garden’s elements is a water feature, which explores the interaction between woodland and water. This design draws inspiration from the medieval hortus conclusus.
Another feature is a memorial garden that honours the lives of those who lost their lives to gun violence. It is designed to raise awareness about the emotional impact of these tragedies.
Svigals + Partners’ pavilion
The New Haven Botanical Garden of Healing Dedicated to Gun Violence has a lot going for it. The site consists of a sylvan oasis of flowers and greenery, a ginormous statue of a Native American, and a memorial plaza, but the best thing about this new swath of land is the chance to connect with nature. This is a rare opportunity for New Haveners.
One of the city’s most promising architects, Svigals + Partners, has been showcasing some of the firm’s finest work at the Poetic Structure exhibition, which will open to the public on April 29. The company’s portfolio includes an impressive array of architectural styles, but the Botanical Garden of Healing is the firm’s first foray into the public realm. It was a community project, with some of the city’s most grieving families providing input. In the end, Svigals and Partners and the other stakeholders succeeded in their stated aim of enhancing the quality of life for the city’s most vulnerable.
